How Much Is the Social Security Tax and Who Pays It?

You can roll over amounts from Archer MSAs and other HSAs into an HSA. You don’t have to be an eligible individual to make a rollover contribution from your existing HSA to a new HSA. Rollovers aren’t subject to the annual contribution limits. You must remain an eligible individual during the testing period. For a qualified HSA funding distribution, the testing period begins with the month in which the qualified HSA funding distribution is contributed and ends on the last day of the 12th month following that month.

Unlike the previous discussions, “you” refers to the employer and not to the employee. These amounts are normally included in income on your return for the year of the rollover from the qualified employer plan to a Roth IRA. As discussed earlier, the deduction you can take for contributions made to your traditional IRA depends on whether you or your spouse was covered for any part of the year by an employer retirement plan. What are the filing and notice requirements?

Withholding thresholds for early filers are climbing

For the last-month rule, the testing period begins with the last month of your tax year and ends on the last day of the 12th month following that month (for example, December 1, 2021, through December 31, 2022). You can set up a SEP for a year as late as the due date (including extensions) of your business income tax return for the year you want to establish the plan. For early filers set to reach their full retirement age in 2023, the SSA can withhold $1 in benefits for every $3 in earned income beyond $56,520 ($4,710 per month). As of 2024, this withholding threshold is rising to $59,520 ($4,960 per month).

If you receive distributions for other reasons, the amount you withdraw will be subject to income tax and may be subject to an additional 20% tax. You don’t have to make withdrawals from your HSA each year. If you withdraw any of those amounts, the amount is treated the same as any other distribution from an HSA, discussed later.. An HRA must receive contributions from the employer only. Reimbursements from an HRA that are used to pay qualified medical expenses aren’t taxed. Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) plans can provide a significant source of income at retirement by allowing employers to set aside money in retirement accounts for themselves and their employees.

However, a part or all of the distribution from your traditional IRA may be included in gross income and subjected to ordinary income tax. A plan loan offset is the amount your employer plan account balance is reduced, or offset, to repay a loan from the plan. How long you have to complete the rollover of a plan loan offset depends on what kind of plan loan offset you have. A qualified plan loan offset occurs when a plan loan in good standing is offset because your employer plan terminates, or because you sever from employment. If your plan loan offset occurs for any other reason, then you have 60 days from the date the offset occurs to complete your rollover.

COLA is the mechanism by which the SSA adjusts benefits most years to account for the effects of inflation. In other words, if the price for a broad basket of goods and services increases, Social Security checks should, ideally, rise by the same amount to ensure no loss of purchasing power. For taxes due in 2021, refer to the Social Security income maximum of $137,700 as you’re filing for the 2020 tax year. Keep in mind that the Social Security program is facing long-term financing shortfalls that could affect future benefits.
